Oil shales in the Mate Yehuda Regional Council: analysis, impacts and recommendations
In 2008, IEI received a license to seek and produce oil from oil shales in an area measuring 24,000 Hectares in the southern flatlands. The area is located within the jurisdiction of the Mate Yehuda, Yoav and Lachish regional councils. The company's administration decided to initiate a pilot project for oil production on 0.8 Hectare of land in Zecharya; a project expected to last two years.
Zenovar, in conjunction with the Adama company, assessed the economic implications of this enterprise and identified the environmental issues that it creates for the Mate Yehuda Regional Council, from the council’s perspective. The team submitted recommendations for terms to be met before beginning this pilot project. Their work included a comprehensive review of professional literature, a survey of local residents, and a financial analysis.
The analysis and recommendations can be found in the complete document.
