Dairy sector: Strategy for developing the dairy farms in the southern Arava district
The dairy farms in the southern Arava district have produced below-average yields over the last years. Zenovar and a steering committee appointed by the Israel Dairy Board have presented ways of assisting this sector.
The reform in the dairy industry detached the farms in the southern Arava of the investment required at the time. In retrospect, the dairy industry throughout most of Israel developed thanks to upgraded infrastructure while the dairy farms in the Arava were left behind. The lack of shaded areas for the cows as well as inadequate ventilation and cooling infrastructures are especially apparent. Another significant problem is the distance from central Israel, which increases the price of inputs, particularly of food, and makes it more difficult to sell beef. The results are apparent in all aspects of agro-technological performance. Zenovar analyzed food utilization compared to cost per portion and evaluated the option of preparing food on-site. Another parameter considered was the cost of cow turnover vs. average milk output. Recommendations were made and a project manager was appointed to promote a regional solution for the southern Arava.
