Strategy for agricultural development in Bedouin villages in the Negev
The chapter on agriculture was taken from Socio-Economic Strategies for Bedouin villages, by Adalya Consulting and Management Company
Based on assessments made by Zenovar, Bedouin agriculture yields an annual income of approximately 520 million NIS:
- Sheep and goats: 450 million NIS annually, of which contribution to households is estimated at 80 million NIS
- Dryland farming: 60 million NIS annually, of which 25 million goes to household finances
- Irrigated agriculture: 3 million NIS, of which 1.5 million goes to household finances
- Private farming: 10 million NIS, for household finances
- Camels: approximately 2500 camels
These agriculture fields employ family members and workers at an equivalent of 1,300 full-time positions, and create additional employment opportunities in adjacent sectors.
The challenges for planning Bedouin agriculture, as shown by the Zenovar analyses, include:
- Basic resources: land and water allocations
- Cultivating professional and non-professional human resources
- Financial resources: investment capital, assistance via capital recovery, necessary insurance
- Institutional resources: training, R&D, mechanization, agricultural training for high school-aged children, improving grazing areas, livestock enclosures
- Logistical infrastructure: roads, electricity, water, communication lines, preparing land for agricultural use
- Changes to organizational culture: size of commercial unit, working in unions and corporations
- Developing post-harvest capabilities
